The number of people who’re out as LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer) in our community can easily be counted on one hand. That points to an obvious lack of representation and awareness that has been driven by many factors. Human history throughout has been a heteronormative and a homophobic one and our society was (and still is) no different from others in not being conducive to LGBTQ+ voices.
Although there are a lot of Tibetans who are very understanding and willing to give others the benefit of the doubt, there’s still a lot of prejudice and ignorance around LGBTQ issues that give rise to discrimination and the marginalization of LGBTQ Tibetans.
I know for many Tibetans, as it is for me, staying in the closet is a better option than the alternative. However, the path to progress begins with education and personal stories can go a long way in moving hearts and minds.
This project exists on various social media platforms to share lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer Tibetans’ stories, concerns and perspectives.
You can submit your stories, or any other ideas you might have via email: firstname.lastname@example.org
Everyone’s info will remain private but for those worried, anonymous submissions can be made through the project’s Tumblr blog. Though a name and an email is required to submit, you can make up a name and email and submit with no problems.
Looking forward to changing our narratives.
